Ambulance Service Revitalized

In January of 2007, Trinitas brought the complete ambulance service and medical dispatch system internal, hiring all of our own personnel and establishing an emergency medical services (EMS) communications center. The hospital now has a fleet of six ambulances, and the service is now operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our EMS communication center is called MedComm, which is an acronym for medical communications. MedComm is also operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

At peak hours of service during the week, there is a supervisor and two communicators. Minimum field staffing is one ambulance crew 24 hours a day. During the week the service is flexed up to meet the daily volume demand. On a normal day during the week there are anywhere between four and five ambulances in service for ten or more hours each day. All requests for transportation of patients are required to go through MedComm. If our service cannot handle a transport due to volume or a service line that we do not have (like wheel chair van service), we make arrangements for one of our back up providers to handle the assignment. This will assist our program in making plans for future improvements in meeting the needs of our internal and external customers. We also have field supervisors to assist our crews with whatever they need. This can be anything from lift assists to restock equipment or problem solving and facilitating patient paperwork for discharges.

Our service will respond to requests for mutual aid 9-1-1 assignments in Elizabeth and the municipalities surrounding Elizabeth. We also now specialize in transporting bariatric patients. We provide this service throughout the counties in central and northern New Jersey. These trips are at the requests of a healthcare facility, an EMS agency or the patient themselves. This specific component of our ambulance service has received the most acclaim from the patient population it serves. Patients continually mention our personnel's attention to their needs, respect and maintaining their dignity.

The personnel assigned to these departments are also resources that assist in our facility wide Emergency Preparedness efforts through involvement in the Incident Support Team and facilitating emergent notifications to hospital personnel.
