Nonsurgical Alternative To Hysterectomy Offered

One hysterectomy is performed every fifty seconds in the United States, making it one of the most frequently performed operations for women. A hysterectomy, which involves the removal of the uterus, sometimes includes the removal of the ovaries, cervix and fallopian tubes as well.

But at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, a much simpler procedure is now being offered for women who undergo hysterectomy to treat excessive menstrual or uterine bleeding. Called "endometrial ablation" (EA), the procedure involves removing only the lining of a woman's uterus using warmed water.

"Studies show that endometrial ablation can prevent more than 80% of currently performed hysterectomies," says Cesar Holgado, MD, Chairman of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Trinitas. "In contrast to a hysterectomy, the ablation procedure can be performed in a gynecologist's office or as an outpatient surgery. Anesthesia is used, however patients do not need to have an incision."

With a hysterectomy, most women require up to 8 weeks for recovery. However, most women who undergo endometrial ablation are able to return to normal activities within 2-3 days.
