Prolapse
It is estimated that nearly nine million women suffer from vaginal prolapse,
an often-painful condition resulting in pelvic pressure and urine leakage.
Vaginal prolapse occurs when the surrounding pelvic organs, like the
bladder, rectum, intestines or uterus push on the vagina. Childbirth, pelvic
surgery, heredity, menopause or aging can all contribute to this condition.
In the past, major surgery was the only answer.
But now, help is available for women who prefer a less intensive approach.
Labib Riachi, MD, a specialist in advanced pelvic surgery and female urinary
incontinence, is now the first physician in the region to perform IVS
(Intra-Vaginal Slingplasty) using a minimally-invasive technique. "By
implanting a surgical mesh tape at the top of the vagina, we are able to
relieve vaginal prolapse in almost 90 percent of women," explained Dr.
Riachi. "Most of these procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis,
allowing women to return to normal activities in just a few days."
